FILM I BIO

Sandglass Theatre, USA: Babylon

Sandglass Theater began work on Babylon, Journeys of Refugees, in 2015. It was a live, ensemble production addressing the US response to refugee resettlement, and it began touring two years later.

Babylon was about to leave for its first extended tour to the West Coast of the US in March 2020 when the Covid-19pandemic hit. All of our touring was cancelled. During this time, with the ensemble breaking up and seeking work outside of the Theater world, we decided to let go of the live performance and create a film of the piece.

Working through the pandemic, quarantined and under pressure from health protocol constraints, we brought the ensemble back together. While we mourned the loss of our live performance, I believe that the film succeeds in bringing us much closer to the lives of the puppet characters.

Thank you to the many refugees from Afghanistan, Bhutan, Burundi, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Iraq, and Somalia who told us their stories.

Eric Bass of Sandglass Theater will be on hand to answer questions after the screening of the film.
